Yagyopavit Sanskar
Yagyopavit Sanskar is a very important rite of Hinduism, which is considered to be the process of attaining Dwijatva (second birth). This rite empowers a person religiously, morally and spiritually. It is considered mandatory especially for Brahmins, but some Kshatriya and Vaishya communities also wear it.
Yagyopavit Sanskar is a sacred and necessary process, which empowers a person religiously and morally. By adopting this rite, a person can make his life more disciplined and spiritually rich.
Importance of Yagyopavit Sanskar
1. Attainment of Dwijatva: Brahmin is called Dwij, which means "twice born". By performing Yagyopavit Sanskar, the boy is considered to be born again.
2. Wearing of sacred thread: During this rite, a sacred thread called Yagyopavit (Janeu) is tied on the left shoulder of the boy, which is a symbol of religious discipline and morality.
3. Permission to study Vedas: After the Sanskar, the boy becomes eligible to read Vedas and scriptures.

4. Increase in intelligence and knowledge: This Sanskar increases the memory power and knowledge-gaining capacity of a person.

1. Gauri Ganesh Puja – The auspicious work begins with Ganpati Vandana.

2. Punyah Vachan – Resolution for the purification of the family and purity of the Sanskar.

3. Maha Sankalp – Resolution of religious duties in the boy’s life is taken.

4. Kalash Puja – The Kalash is installed with holy water and the deities are invoked.

5. Upanayan Sanskar – The boy is made to wear the sacred thread.

6. Initiation into the Gayatri Mantra – This mantra helps in the spiritual upliftment of a person.

7. Havan – The offering is made in the holy fire with Vedic mantras.

• North India: Here the Yagyopaveet Sanskar is mostly performed between the ages of 8 to 16 years.

• South India: Here it is called 'Upanayanam' and it is performed in childhood.

• Maharashtra and Gujarat: In some communities, Yagyopaveet Sanskar is performed before marriage.
